Convenient store 7-Eleven is celebrating its 83rd birthday with a cool giveaway to help you beat the summer heat. Visit any participating 7-Eleven store on Sunday, July 11, between 8:00am-11:00pm and get a FREE 7.11 oz Slurpee drink. Check the store locator to find participating locations near you.
Machines to make frozen beverages were invented by Omar Knedlik in the late 1950s. When Knedlik's soda fountain broke down, he was forced to store his drinks in a freezer to stay cool, which caused them to become slushy.
In 1965, 7-Eleven bought some of Knedlik's ICEE machines and sold the product that in 1967 became known as the "Slurpee" for the sound made when drinking them. The term was coined by Bob Stanford, a 7-Eleven agency director.
Today’s much more sophisticated machine combines syrup, carbon dioxode and water to dispense Slurpees at the perfect sipping temperature of 28 degrees.
Which flavor will you order?
