This year marks the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest. On October 17, 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen organized a great horse race for the public commemoration of their marriage that took place five days before -- and so the tradition of Oktoberfest began.
At the stroke of noon on Saturday, Munich's mayor Christian Ude signaled the opening of Oktoberfest by tapping the first beer keg. "O'zapft is," or "It's tapped," declared the Mayor.
